Throughout Reception class the children will be taught to read and write through Read, Write, Inc.

Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read sets of sounds and then to blend these sounds together allowing them to read words. The books that they read at school will only contain the sounds they’ve already learned, so children learn quickly and confidently.

Children in reception with start of learning Set 1 sounds.

  • Set 1: m a s d t i n p g o c k u b f e l h r j v y w z x sh th ch qu ng nk ck
  • Set 2: ay ee igh ow oo oo ar or air ir ou oy

sounds with two letters such as 'sh' are called special friends.

At school we teach using Fred talk.

Fred talk uses pure sounds (‘m’ not’ muh’,’s’ not ‘suh’, etc.) so that your child will be able to blend the sounds into words more easily.

For example, m-o-p, c-a-t, m-a-n, sh-o-p, b-l-a-ck.
